Womens health questions: Aromatherapy is gift
from Mother nature to help you
In aromatherapy, aroma molecules from essential
oils disperse in the air, carrying spicy fragrances to your nose,
where the molecules contact nerves on the nasal cavity olfactory
bulbs. When an aroma molecule hits these nerves, its sets off a
reaction that results in brain activity such as muscle relaxation
or mood change.
Aromatherapy can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.
You can add a few drops of essential oil to an aromatherapy diffuser,
or you can sniff it straight from the bottle. You can also benefit
from aromatherapy during a bath or massage.
Aromatherapy oils contain molecules small enough
to enter your skin; however, most need to be diluted with a carrier
oil such as almond, jojoba or sesame to avoid irritation. Essential
oils are relatively safe, but they shouldn't be ingested unless
under the supervision of a health care professional. Pregnant or
lactating women and people with asthma should use essential oils
only under advice of their doctor.
Here are some womens health questions and
conditions that aromatherapy can help.
1. Depression
Depression is an illness that affects the whole
body. It changes the way you eat and sleep, your self confidence,
and the way you think about things and others around you. Depression
can be triggered by stress, lack of exercise, chemical imbalance
in the brain or a traumatic life event. Essential Oils Suggested:
Jasmine, Lavender , Nerol.
2. Alleviate the Pain of Uncomfortable
Periods
Menorrhagia, or heavy periods, can be stemmed
with chamomile, cypress or rose. Women who suffer dysmenorrhea,
or painful periods, may find relief with the following essential
oils: chamomile, clary sage, cypress, hops, juniper berry, lavender,
marjoram or rosemary.
3. Soothe Yeast Infections
Another common female problem is vaginal thrush
(Candida albicans). Also known as yeast infection, this is a fungal
infection of the mucous membranes of the vagina. Symptoms are a
thick white discharge accompanied by itching. A bath containing
lavender or tea tree oil may help.
4. Make Menopause Easier
Womens health questions: Menopause, which marks
the permanent cessation of menstrual activity, can be a wonderful
stage of a woman's life. Yet, the stage leading to menopause, called
perimenopause, can bring on bouts of hot flashes and night sweats.
Specific for these symptoms are cypress and clary sage essential
oils. Oils that can help balance your entire body during menopause
include bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, geranium, lavender, melissa
and ylang ylang.
5. Fight Menopause-Related Insomnia
Insomnia is common during perimenopause. Keville
suggests aromatherapy baths for a peaceful night's sleep. "Warm
baths are relaxing, especially when you add a soothing aromatherapy
formula," she says. She recommends adding two drops of bergamot,
3 drops of lavender and 3 drops of sandalwood to your bath to calm
your body and mind. Or, you can put 1/2 drop of frankincense or
ylang ylang on the edge of your pillowcase to help you sleep through
the night.
Womens health questions: I'm pregnant...
Children and pregnant women should use a small
subset of essential oils in 1% dilution. Do not use essential
oils at all with young babies. Some pregnant women should
not use essential oils at all, especially if there is any danger
of miscarriage. It may be prudent to completely avoid essential
oil use during the first trimester.
Womens health questions:
Shoulders pains
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body. The joint
includes four tendons. The purpose of a tendon is to hold muscle
to bone. Together, these four "rotator cuff" tendons stabilize
the upper arm bone to the shoulder socket and allow a wide range
of motion in the shoulder.
Any swelling, inflammation, tearing, or bony changes around these
tendons causes pain when a person tries to move the arm above the
head, behind the back, or straight out in front...click
